Photographs taken in recent weeks in different countries all showed scenes from demonstrations – peaceful or otherwise – against rising food prices. “We want half price not half rice” was the message on one protester’s placard in Manila, epitomizing the tensions present in those countries where people spend on average 70% of their meager budgets on food, compared to 15% in Europe. This goes well beyond the subprime crisis or the discourse by experts on the impact on our western economies.
